Two-photon absorption (TPA) is the absorption of two photons of identical or different frequencies in order to excite a molecule from one state (usually the ground state) to a higher energy, most commonly an excited electronic energy difference between the involved lower and upper states of the molecule is equal to the sum of the photon energies of the two photons . This volume of proceedings of the latest International Conference on Multiphoton Processes provides a timely report on the latest work on the interaction of lasers with atoms and molecules, including short laser pulses, intense fields, stabilization, high harmonic generation, coherent control of reactions and reports from leading laboratories.
The 12th International Conference on Multiphoton Processes (ICOMP12) and the 3rd International Conference on Attosecond Physics (ATTO3), held jointly in Sapporo, Japan, during July , showcased studies at the forefront of research on multiphoton processes and attosecond physics. This book summarizes presentations and discussions from these two : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. Multiphoton Processes processes of interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter that are accompanied by the absorption or emission (or both) of several electromagnetic quanta (photons) in an elementary event. The main difficulty in observing multiphoton processes is their extraordinarily low probability as compared to single-photon processes.
As an example of the resolution obtainable with multiphoton fabrication, we will consider the most common multiphoton fabrication technique, multiphoton absorption polymerization (MAP, Fig. ).If the laser beam is held in a fixed location while exposing a photoresist, a single volume element (‘voxel’) of polymer is created. In typical multiphoton photoresists, the best . Also, in multiphoton processes, the amplitude of the near-resonant level interferes with the background due to off-resonance contributions by the continuum as well as all other bound states.

Because multiphoton absorption has a nonlinear dependence on the light intensity, the effective point-spread function (PSF) for fabrication is smaller than the PSF for linear absorption at the same wavelength. Thus, multiphoton fabrication offers finer resolution than would otherwise .The following sections are included: * Introduction * A brief review of multiphoton absorption theory * Coherent processes * Incoherent Processes * Dephasing Processes * Multiphoton absorption processes * Virtual States as Intermediates * Monocolor excitation * Optical-optical double resonance * Bound States as Intermediates * Dissociative states as intermediates * Multiphoton Author: Ikuzo Tanaka, Masahiro Kawasaki.Theory of Multiphoton Processes by Farhad H.
